First Freshening Does

It's always exciting to watch our young doelings as they begin to bridge the gap from cuddly cuties to mature does.  The characteristics they gain from their dam and sire are intended to improve them and to be a more correct individual than either of the parents.

Our thoughts on breeding Yearling Does:

Although we generally wait until our doelings are 14-18 months of age before breeding, occasionally we decide to expose a weanling doe to freshen as a yearling.  This works best with early maturing doelings that easily maintained their weight throughout weaning. We only hand breed these doelings, so that we know without a doubt when the pregnancy should end and plan to attend the birth (to assist when needed).  Kids from our yearling does are always supplemented with milk from our Senior does and weaned by 4 months of age to avoid stress to these first freshening does.

Blazing Star Hershey Cow (pictured below as a week old doeling and also as a newborn) was born in December of 2014.  She is a lovely spotted doe. She already has such a sweet disposition, with lots of dairy character. Hershey has two different colors of her gorgeous pendulous ears.  She is one of twins (1 doeling and 1 buckling, Jupiter) and descends from a cross between Copper-Hills and Caprine Lake lines.  Hershey has been exposed to Huckleberry for her first freshening in mid-December 2016.
